Potential social media threat directed at different school

An investigation into a potential social media threat initially thought to be directed at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Jefferson City revealed the post was actually directed at a middle school of the same name in a different state.

An early morning message from Principal Emily Vallandingham sent to parents shared that the Jefferson City Police Department and school administrators had begun investigating a social media post overnight. Vallandingham said TJMS would host additional security Thursday as a precaution.

A subsequent email later Thursday morning explained that local police were able to determine the post was associated with another Thomas Jefferson Middle School in a different state. The Jefferson City police department confirmed with authorities in that state a suspect was taken into custody, and there was no threat to Jefferson City Public Schools, according to information provided by the police department and TJMS.

“We appreciate everyone who adhered to the adage, ‘See something, say something,’” Vallandingham wrote. “We also are grateful for our partnership with the Jefferson City Police Department and for their quick response and thorough investigation.”
