Missouri women defeat Arizona State, finish 2-0 in Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Missouri women’s basketball team dominated the third quarter Sunday, defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils 71-60 to finish with a 2-0 record in the Arizona State Classic.

The Tigers outscored the Sun Devils 24-12 in the third quarter, turning a three-point halftime deficit into a nine-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Lauren Hansen knocked down a jumper on Missouri’s opening possession of the game and the Tigers never trailed in the first quarter. Hayley Frank scored a layup and knocked down a 3-pointer to put Missouri ahead 13-8 late in the quarter.

The Tigers led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter and pushed its lead to seven with a jumper by Hansen early in the second quarter. The Sun Devils answered with a 10-3 run to tie the score at 20 midway through the quarter.

Tyi Skinner made a 3 in the final minute of the half to give Arizona State a 31-28 lead at intermission.

Missouri began the second half on a 17-4 run. Hansen had eight points and a pair of 3s during that run and Frank added seven points.

The Tigers led 52-43 entering the fourth. Frank started the quarter with a fast-break 3 and Missouri led by double digits the rest of the game.

Frank and Hansen each finished with 23 points to lead the Tigers, who shot 49 percent from the floor. Sara-Rose Smith came off the bench to post a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds and Haley Troup also reached double figures with 10 points.

Jefferson City grad Sarah Linthacum made her first career start Sunday for the Tigers. She finished with two points and three rebounds.

Skinner finished with a gamehigh 29 points for Arizona State (6-3), making 6-of-9 shot from 3-point range. Trayanna Crisp added 11 points.

Missouri (9-1) hosts Omaha at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
