Helias girls top John Burroughs at Columbia College

COLUMBIA — Adalyn Koelling finished with a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds Sunday, guiding the Helias Lady Crusaders past the John Burroughs Bombers for a 60-57 victory in the Sophie Cunningham Classic at Columbia College.

Following the win, Koelling was named Helias’ MVP of the game. She shot 10-of-17 from the floor and knocked down 5-of-8 shots from 3-point range.

Both teams are state-ranked in the preseason Missouri Basketball Coaches Association poll. John Burroughs is No. 2 in Class 5 and Helias is No. 4 in Class 5.

The game featured eight ties and seven lead changes.

John Burroughs led 13-11 after one quarter, but Helias won the scoring battle 16-8 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 27-21 advantage.

The Bombers battled back and took a 41-40 lead at the end of the third quarter, but the Lady Crusaders scored 20 fourth-quarter points to pull out the victory, less than 24 hours after winning a tournament title in the Fatima Comet Classic.

Mikah Edwards finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Helias, while Ava Morris also reached double figures with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Allie Turner, who was named team MVP for John Burroughs (5-1), had a team-high 22 points.

Monet Witherspoon finished with 20 points.

Helias (5-0) plays Wednesday at Class 4 No. 10 Southern Boone. The JV game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.

Tipton 51, Cardinal Ritter 46

COLUMBIA — The Tipton Lady Cardinals continued their undefeated start to the season Sunday with a 51-46 victory against the Cardinal Ritter Lions in the Sophie Cunningham Classic at Columbia College.

Tipton led 15-8 after one quarter, then used a 12-0 run in the second quarter to maintain a 28-22 lead going into halftime.

The Lady Cardinals continued to lead 40-35 going into the fourth quarter.

Myra Claas, who was named Tipton’s MVP of the game, led her team with 20 points. Briar Cox scored 16 points and grabbed her 1,000th career rebound in the win, becoming the first Lady Cardinal to reach that milestone in program history.

Charlee Bailey also reached double figures, scoring Tipton’s remaining 15 points.

Ai’Niya Williams scored a game-high 21 points and was named team MVP for Class 4 No. 6 Cardinal Ritter (1-1).

Tipton (5-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 2 by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association, plays Thursday at Class 1 No. 3 Leeton.

Boys Basketball Mid-Mo HomeSchool 62, Legacy Academy 59

The Mid-Missouri HomeSchool Mavericks scored 21 points in the fourth quarter Saturday, rallying to a 62-59 home victory against the Legacy Academy Fire.

The Mavericks led 18-16 after one quarter and 28-27 at halftime. The Fire won the scoring battle 22-13 in the third quarter to take a 49-41 lead into the fourth.

Mid-Missouri HomeSchool outscored Legacy Academy 21-10 in the final eight minutes.

Paul Hayes finished with a team-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting for the Mavericks. Kaden Hayes had 14 points and Coben Hartman added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Mid-Missouri HomeSchool began its weekend Friday with a 69-44 win against Applewood Christian in Sedalia.

The Mavericks led 13-11 after one quarter, 28-19 at halftime and 51-37 through three quarters.

Hartman had team-highs 15 points and eight rebounds, followed by Kaden Hayes with 14 points and Paul Hayes with 11 points.

Mid-Missouri HomeSchool (6-3) is off until Dec. 12, when it hosts Liberty Christian Academy of Wright City.
