Post 5: Went 2-2 at regional

In the bottom half of the inning, Schulte hit a leadoff double, advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on Jordan’s single to right field, tying the game at 1.

Post 49 answered with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to build a six-run advantage.

Each team finished the game with six hits. Jeffries collected Jefferson City’s first hit of the game, a two-out single in the third.

Davis Oswalt went 2-for-4 with a single, a double and three RBI to lead Tupelo, while Collier finished with two singles and two RBI.

Billy Underwood, who started on the mound for the Post 5 Seniors, pitched four-plus innings, allowing five runs on three hits with four walks and one strikeout.

Holden Brand followed with two innings of relief, giving up two runs on two hits and one walk. Jordan pitched the seventh inning, striking out one and giving up one hit.

Taylor Ballard was the winning pitcher for Tupelo, striking out four and walking five in 5⅓ innings. McCoy earned the save, striking out two and retiring all four batters he faced.

Jefferson City finished with a 2-2 record in the Mid-South Regional. The Post 5 Seniors finished 1-2 in both 2017 and 2018.

In Saturday’s other game in the regional, Gonzales (La.) Post 81 knocked off Troy (Ala.) Post 70 for a 5-3 victory, handing Troy its first loss of the tournament.

The tournament will conclude today. Gonzales (13-8-1) will play an elimination game against Tupelo (35-2) at 2 p.m., and the winner will play Troy (27-5) for the championship at 5 p.m.

The winner advances to the American Legion World Series, which begins Thursday in Shelby, N.C.
