What will historians say?

David Awbrey,

Dear Editor,

Presidential historians have for decades determined President James Buchanan of Pennsylvania to be the winner of the lowest president of all presidents because he never made any effort to stop or hinder those southern states from seceding from the Union from the date Abraham Lincoln won the race in November 1860 to the date of transfer of peaceful power in April 1961. In those days, the transfer took place in April.

Before we fast forward to 2021/2022, in the 1812 War with Great Britain, as the British troops approached Washington, D.C., President Madison decided to get on his horse as commander in chief and direct his forces to repeal the British. On he went until he approached the last American soldier guarding a bridge. The soldier told him, “Don’t go over that hill, Mr. President. The British are approaching it;” he turned his horse about and quickly rode off.

It’s too bad the Secret Service stopped President Trump from personally leading his cultist/insurrectionist mob with firearms and explosives and a platform to lynch the vice president to the Capitol Building to stop a constitutional required meeting from happening. It would have been interesting to see how he would have led them to Capitol Hill.

Nevertheless, I suspect, presidential historians will, in short order, move President James Buchanan from his lowly position one step higher in the ladder. While he never made any effort to stop the southern states, he also never egged them on either.

Trump came to the office never having ever been elected to any political office. This reminds me of the story, when President Kennedy announced his political advisers from Harvard, Yale and so on. His vice president, LBJ, was so impressed he told the speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn, a fellow Texas Democrat, of these people.

Sam asked LBJ one question, the only question Sam needed to know the answer to: Had any of these people ever been elected to anything?
