The unofficial results from last Tuesday’s primary election in Callaway County indicate around 30 percent of registered voters turned out.

In Callaway County, 29,250 citizens are registered to vote, but only 7,981 ballots were cast Tuesday. That accounts for 27.29 percent of voters making their voices heard.

Of the 7,981 ballots cast, 6,317 (79.15 percent) were for the Republican party and 1,643 (20.59 percent) were for the Democratic party. Seventeen votes were cast for the Libertarian party, and four votes were cast for the Constitution party. These two parties accounted for less than a percent of the overall vote.

The Callaway County Clerk’s Office said the voter turnout for this primary election was around what was expected. They had forecast around a 25 percent turnout.

The official results of the primary election in 2020 indicated a similar level of voter turnout; 8,359 (28.95 percent) registered voters cast their ballots with 5,812 voting for the Republican party and 2,340 voting for the Democratic party. The Libertarian, Green and Constitution parties accounted for less than a percent of the votes.

The 2020 general election had a much higher voter turnout, which can be attributed to the United States presidential and vice presidential races being on the ballot; 21,256 (73.04 percent) of the 29,100 registered voters turned out for this election.

The Callaway County Clerk’s Office said November usually has a higher voter turnout compared to the primary election.
