Helias in fifth place at Class 5 state golf

CAPE GIRARDEAU — The Helias Crusaders are positioned in fifth place in the team standings following Monday’s opening round of the Class 5 boys golf state championships at Dalhousie Golf Club.

As a team, Helias posted a 24-over 312 on Day 1. Rockhurst leads the way with a 7-over 295, followed by Lee’s Summit West with a 306 and Priory with a 308. C.B.C. carded a 311, one stroke ahead of Helias in the running for the final team trophy.

Davis Linhardt is positioned in allstate contention after shooting a 2-over 74 in his first round to lead the Crusaders. Linhardt, who is among six players tied for eighth place, birdied the par-4 third hole and rounded out his scorecard with 14 pars and three bogeys.

Archer Schnieders was next for Helias with a 4-over 76, which is tied for 23rd place out of 81 state qualifiers. Schnieders birdied the par-5 18th hole and added 13 pars, three bogeys and one double-bogey.

Burke Bauer was also in the top half of the field after shooting a 6-over 78, which is tied for 34th place. Bauer birdied the par-3 eighth hole and had 12 pars, three bogeys and a double-bogey.

Miles Vollet rounded out Helias’ team score with a 12-over 84, which is tied for 57th place. Vollet had three birdies — the 18th and the par-4 10th and 14th holes — to go with four pars, eight bogeys, two double-bogeys and a triple-bogey.

Rockhurst’s William King was one of four golfers to break par Monday. He leads the individual standings after shooting a 3-under 69 in his first round.

The state tournament concludes with today’s second round, which starts at 8 a.m. The top 15 individuals receive all-state honors and the top four teams earn state trophies.
