JUERGENSMEYER

Sr. Marie Edith Juergensmeyer, 90, of St. Louis, went to her eternal rest Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022.

She was born May 8, 1931, in Koeltztown, the daughter of Conrad and Louise (Schaefer) Juergensmeyer.

She professed her first vows in 1952 to the School Sisters of Notre Dame in St. Louis and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in education in 1957 from the former Notre Dame College in St. Louis and her master’s degree in elementary education from Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville later in her career.

She was dearly loved by all the communities in which she lived and served through teaching and ministry. She taught elementary school at Sacred Heart, of Morrilton, Arkansas; St. Mary, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Villa Gesu in St. Louis; St. Paul, of Highland, Illinois; St. Peter’s, of Jefferson City; Immaculate Conception, of Loose Creek; and Sacred Heart, of Rich Fountain. She also ministered at St. Michael, of Russellville; the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center, of Jefferson City; and served through pastoral ministry at Sacred Heart in Rich Fountain. She devoted the next 18 years to serving the families of St. Peter’s Parish in Jefferson City, also in pastoral ministry. She then returned to Immaculate Conception in Loose Creek, where she was engaged in volunteer services until 2015. She spent the remainder of her life at Veronica House and later at Anna House in Bridgeton.

She will be remembered fondly by all those whose lives she touched through her kindness, teaching and ministry. She was an avid crafter and spent many hours crocheting and sewing, making lovely homemade gifts for family and friends, as well as items she donated to the poor or to craft sales to raise funds for ministry to the less fortunate. She had a beautiful singing voice which she shared on many occasions, and taught music to her elementary students.

At her 60th jubilee in 2012, Sr. Edith gratefully reflected on God calling her to religious life and the opportunity to share her faith with both children and adults. “We can spend eternity reviewing how our many prayers were answered,” she said. “And the most important answer is God’s call in our hearts. We can only hear that voice in prayer.”

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Genevieve Juergensmeyer and Dorothy Juergensmeyer; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Felix and Norbert; sister, Florence (Juergensmeyer) Kellenberger; and an infant brother.

Private services will be held in St. Louis.

Contributions may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
