HUGEN

Shirley Marie Hugen, 85, of Jefferson City, passed away on Monday, Oct. 11, 2021, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City.

She was born on Oct. 25, 1935, in Lorimor, Iowa, the sixth child of Joseph and Lenora Janes.

Shirley lived most of her life in Des Moines, Iowa and called that home. There she met and married Earl Hill in 1955 and that union produced four children; Kevin, Kathryn, Teresa and Brian. They were always the center of her life.

In 1965, Shirley met and married Kenneth Hugen. They continued to raise the family and cherished the grandchildren together until his death in 1991. He was the love of her life.

In 2004, Shirley met Bob Silva and she shared her large family with him until her death. Bob loved Shirley so much and took amazing care of her in the last years of her life. His dedication to her is unprecedented in this day and time.

Shirley loved to cook for her family and hosted huge holiday dinners for everyone. Her grandchildren came to love her spaghetti and would request it at all family functions. Even her greatgrandchildren came to refer to it as “gramma’s” spaghetti. Her peanut brittle and fudge were like no other; family and friends requested it every year at Christmas time and with Bob’s help, Shirley would make sure it got to them. Let’s just say many pounds were gained.

Shirley’s love of pretty flowers and red roses were surpassed only by her love of music. There was always country music playing in the home. She sang and danced in the kitchen and really took great comfort in the lyrics. In 1995, she was able to meet in person Charlie Pride who was as gracious as she had always known he would be. Her love of music was passed on to her children and all the way down through three generations to her great-grands, as well.

She is survived by her companion, Bob; daughters, Kathy Rush (Trevis) and Terry Norman (Garry); her grandchildren, Heather McAnulty (Shawn), Kevin Joseph Hugen, Jessica Settle (Jim), Rusty Good (Kylie), Royce Good (Stacy), Denise Fisher (Wes), Kenneth Hugen (Tara), Kathryn Miller (George) and Matthew Norman (Katie Jean.)

Shirley’s legacy continues with great-grands, Christian and Mia McAnulty; Taylor, Payton, and Reese Good; Lindsay Despot; Connor Garrison; Kyron and Keaton Fisher; Beckett Humphrey; Kebrina, Allionna and Avery Hugen; Izzy and Tucker Hugen; Leighton, Rylan and Reagan Good; Logan and Wyatt Miller; August Norman; and Kyle and Joshua Settle.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; her sons, Brian and Kevin Hugen; two brothers, Clifford and Donnie Janes; three sisters, Lois Spencer, Betty Agan, Marion Plew; and a granddaughter, Kelly Marie Norman.

A private celebration of Shirley’s life will be Nov. 20, 2021. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Kenneth, in Suffolk, Virginia.

Arrangements are under the direction of TYLER M. WOODS FUNERAL DIRECTOR, 611 E. Capitol Ave. Jefferson City, MO 65101. (573) 636-2424
